Do You Have a COVID Self-Care Plan?

I’m not sure where you are at in this COVID reality. But I feel like I’m stuck in ground hog day. With three kids just turned 5 and under, I’ve had to open my own homeschooling operation, house organising company and arts and crafts storage extravaganza. Not to mention the amount of food that goes through this house. So when taking care of, educating, raising, organising and inspiring an entire family unit when is the ME time?

It is so easy to get stuck in a lockdown rut which is why finding those pocket moments for self care are so important. Especially if you find yourself doing all of the above while also working from home! So here are my top ways that I incorporate self care into my lockdown routine.

KIND OF YOGA & MEDITATION

Look, realistically you’re not going to get in a 90 minute morning yoga session with a serene meditation at the end. Most likely your down dog will turn into a toning exercise because you’ll be carrying a 15 kilo toddler on your back. That’s the reality but what I’m saying is DO IT ANYWAY. Commit to 10, 20 minutes (that 20 may take you 45) but do it! An easy YouTube search can find short straight to the point yoga videos. I highly recommend Yoga with Adrienne.

Even if you stop and start you will still benefit from the commitment of doing something for yourself. It’s important here to set up expectations. If you understand that the expectation is not to get a ‘regular’ practice but really find a little pocket of time for yourself, you will find it funny or even cute the way your little distractions will try and become a part of your yoga session… who knows by the end of lockdown they may even be doing the perfect crow pose!

FANCY WEAR FANCY WEAR… ROCKING LOCKDOWN IN MY FANCY WEAR.

We’ve all seen the active wear video (if you haven’t… now’s the time). I’ve decided that for lockdown we need to turn the active wear motto inside out and change it to fancy wear. If it was once cool to do the every day in your active wear it’s now even cooler to stay at home in your fancy wear (you heard it here first). Get dressed up to get out… of your bedroom. I know I know… but you’re not going anywhere, except to walk that toy dog. The ritual of getting ready, starting your day, will actually help create important mental punctuation.

QUIET TIME CAN BE TOGETHER

If you need a break but your kids don’t agree on leaving you alone to do their own thing because they are severely allergic to your independence as mine are to mine… let everyone have quiet time together. That means that you take a moment to read books, colour in, knit, go for walks but together. For me this usually happens at the end of the day, I often found myself in a period of time where my kids would refuse to be in their room alone after 7:30, I was tired and annoyed with having to sit there… I just wanted some me time. Instead of leaning into conflict I decided to just bring a book (I haven’t had the time or energy to sit and read for ages). From being frustrated I was now grateful that I had an excuse to just sit, read and get lost in another world for a bit! Best of all it was actually nice to be doing it all together.

In a time where we are limited to our physical ability to disconnect or really invest in our self-care, it’s even more important than ever to find the little pockets of space where we can take care of ourselves. Fill our own buckets and recharge the never ending daily output. Fit in some kind of Yoga or Meditation, get dressed for the day, and take time out to relax together. These three small energy shifts will make a big difference.
